Lily had always found joy in her small-town bakery, where she worked tirelessly each day to create pastries that brought smiles to the faces of her neighbors. It wasn’t a glamorous life, but it was peaceful, filled with the warm scent of bread and the laughter of satisfied customers. Business was steady, and though she didn’t make much money, Lily was content.
One rainy afternoon, while cleaning out her attic, she stumbled upon an old chest tucked away behind some boxes. It looked out of place, as if it hadn’t been touched in years. Inside, wrapped in delicate cloth, was a beautifully bound recipe book. The cover was worn, but the intricate patterns of flourishes and leaves gave it an air of mystery. The pages were yellowed with time, and the handwriting inside was elegant but unfamiliar. Each recipe had a unique name, but one in particular caught her eye: The Fortune Cake.
Intrigued by the name, Lily decided to try the recipe. The instructions were oddly specific, calling for ingredients she’d never used before—rare herbs and unusual spices. But her curiosity outweighed her hesitation. After tracking down the ingredients, she spent the evening baking the cake, following the directions to the letter. When it came out of the oven, the cake was golden and perfect, with a sweet, rich aroma that filled her kitchen.
Lily sliced the cake and shared it with her customers the next morning. To her surprise, the bakery was busier than it had ever been. People from all over the town came flooding in, eager to try the new cake. Word spread quickly, and soon Lily’s bakery became the talk of the town. Within a week, she was selling out of everything by midday, and by the end of the month, she was making more money than she ever had.
At first, Lily couldn’t believe her luck. Her life, once quiet and simple, was now filled with excitement. New customers poured in every day, and the bakery’s popularity continued to grow. Her life seemed perfect—too perfect, perhaps. But Lily, lost in the joy of her newfound success, didn’t notice the small, unsettling changes happening around her. Nor did she think to question the source of her sudden good fortune....
