IT ENDS WITH US

The days after the airport were a blur for Alex. He went through the motions—work, friends, the usual routine—but everything felt distant, like his life had shifted just out of reach. It had been months since he last saw Nia, yet every quiet moment pulled her back into his thoughts. The weight of unfinished conversations and unspoken goodbyes sat heavy on his chest.

One evening, as he sat alone at home, his phone buzzed. An unknown number. He almost ignored it, but something made him look. The message was short:

“Alex, I need to explain. Meet me at the place where it all started.”

His heart pounded as he stared at the words. Could it really be her? After all this time?

He knew exactly where she meant: the school library. The place where their story began.

Alex arrived early, the air thick with anticipation. As he sat at one of the old wooden tables, memories of Nia flooded his mind. He could almost see her, arms full of books, walking in, that easy smile lighting up her face like she did that first day.

Then, she appeared.

Nia stood in the doorway, hesitating before she walked toward him. She looked different—older, maybe, more burdened by the weight of time. But still Nia.

They sat in silence for a moment, the tension between them heavy. Finally, Alex spoke, his voice low.

“Why now?” His words carried the months of confusion and heartache. “After everything, why contact me now?”

Nia’s eyes dropped to the floor, her fingers fidgeting. “Because I couldn’t keep running,” she whispered. “Not from you. Not anymore.”

She paused, her voice faltering as she gathered her thoughts. “I didn’t leave because I didn’t care, Alex,” she started, her words trembling. “I left because I thought I was protecting you.”

Alex frowned. “Protecting me from what?”

Nia looked away, twisting her fingers in her lap. “From my past.” She hesitated before continuing, her voice soft but steady. “Before I moved here, there was someone… someone I thought I could leave behind. But I couldn’t. Ryan wasn’t the type to let go easily.”

She explained the complicated relationship she had with Ryan, the person she’d been with before Alex. It wasn’t love—it was control. Ryan had used her vulnerabilities, her family’s financial struggles, to manipulate her, threatening to expose them if she didn’t stay in line. Nia had left him, hoping for a fresh start, but Ryan’s presence had never truly disappeared from her life.

“I was stuck,” Nia continued, her voice cracking. “When I met you, I wanted to believe I could be someone new. But Ryan wasn’t going to let me walk away without consequences.”

Alex felt a storm of emotions—anger, confusion, sadness—but most of all, empathy for the weight Nia had been carrying alone. “So why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want you involved,” she said, her eyes glistening. “Ryan was dangerous, and I thought I could handle it. But now… he’s found me again.”

The words hung in the air, sharp and heavy. “What happens now?” Alex asked, his throat dry.

Nia shook her head slowly. “I have to face him. I have to deal with this, and I don’t want you to be dragged into it.”

The conversation lingered between them, the silence speaking volumes. Alex reached across the table, his hand brushing hers, and for a moment, they held onto that connection.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” he said softly, his voice filled with concern.

Her eyes softened, but there was a sadness in them that told him everything. “I’ve already hurt you enough,” Nia whispered. “This is my fight.”

Alex’s heart twisted as he realized the truth. She wasn’t coming back. This wasn’t a chance to fix things—it was her way of saying goodbye, on her terms this time.

Weeks passed, and Alex did his best to move forward. He kept busy, surrounded himself with friends, but the thought of Nia was never far. Some days, it felt like he could still hear her voice, see her standing across the room, smiling at him like she used to. But reality was different now.

One afternoon, a letter arrived. It was from Nia.

“Alex, by the time you read this, I’ll be gone. I don’t know where my journey will take me, but I need to find peace with my past before I can even think about the future. You were the best part of my life, and I’m sorry I hurt you. Please don’t wait for me. Live your life, be happy. And if our paths cross again someday… maybe we’ll get our second chance.”

Alex folded the letter slowly, the words echoing in his mind. There was no closure, not really. Only the understanding that some stories end without a resolution. But as he placed the letter in his drawer, he felt something else—a quiet acceptance.

Sometimes, the hardest part of letting go is realizing that letting go is the only way forward.

The End
