IT STARTS WITH US

Alex stood at the airport, staring at Nia one last time. Everything around them—the noise of the crowd, the announcements, the rush of people—faded away. It was just the two of them, standing there, knowing that after today, everything would be different. He could see the sadness in her eyes, and he felt it too.

This wasn’t how things were supposed to end. As she turned to leave, Alex’s mind wandered back to where it all started.

It had been a normal afternoon in the school library. Alex was struggling to finish a history assignment, the same way he always did. He was staring blankly at the book in front of him when a voice brought him back to reality.

“Is this seat taken?”

He looked up to see Nia standing there, holding a stack of books. She smiled, waiting for an answer. “No, go ahead,” Alex said, moving his stuff to make room.

She sat down, opening her own books, and for a few minutes, they worked quietly. Then Nia sighed loudly, shaking her head. “Why is history so confusing?” she asked, her frustration clear.

Alex laughed. “I was just thinking the same thing. I’ve been staring at this page for an hour, and I still don’t get it.”

That small exchange was the start of everything. From that day on, they started hanging out more—talking between classes, having lunch together. It felt easy being around her, like they’d known each other forever. But as they got closer, Alex started noticing little things about Nia that made him wonder. Sometimes she’d drift off, staring out the window, lost in her own thoughts. Other times, she’d laugh at his jokes but then go quiet, as if something was bothering her.

One day, as they walked home from school, she spoke up.

“Alex, can I tell you something?” Her voice was serious, different from the usual playful tone she had.

“Sure,” he said, feeling a little nervous.

“I’m going to be in the school play,” she said, smiling, but her excitement didn’t reach her eyes. “It’s a big deal for me, but I’m scared I’m going to mess it up.”

“You’ll be amazing,” Alex said, trying to reassure her. “I’ll be there cheering for you.”

She smiled, but Alex could tell there was something more she wasn’t saying. He wanted to ask, but he didn’t. He figured she’d tell him when she was ready.

Weeks passed, and their connection grew stronger. Soon it was prom night. Nia looked stunning, and Alex couldn’t believe he was lucky enough to be there with her. They danced under the lights, laughing, pretending the world outside didn’t exist.

As the night went on, Alex felt something shift inside him. He took Nia’s hand, leading her away from the crowd. They found a quiet spot, and he looked into her eyes. “Nia, there’s something I’ve been wanting to say,” he began, his heart pounding. “I know we haven’t known each other long, but… you’re special to me. I don’t want to lose you.”

Nia’s eyes widened. “Alex, what are you saying?”

“I’m saying I love you,” Alex said, his voice shaky but honest. “And… I want to spend my life with you. Will you marry me?”

Nia stared at him, shocked. The music in the background seemed to fade, and for a moment, everything felt frozen in time.

“Alex… I…,” she stammered, looking conflicted. She glanced away, biting her lip. “There’s something I need to tell you first.”

But before she could finish, the music grew louder again, pulling them back into the prom’s energy. The moment was lost, and Alex felt the unease growing in his chest. What was she going to say? What was she hiding?

The night ended, but the questions stayed with him. Over the next few days, Nia seemed distant, like there was a wall between them. Alex wanted to ask her what was wrong, but he was scared of what the answer might be.

Then, just before graduation, rumors started going around. People were whispering about something from Nia’s past—something about her family. Alex didn’t know what to believe, but he couldn’t ignore it. He confronted her one afternoon, his voice tense.

“Nia, what’s going on? People are saying things, and I don’t know what to think.”

Nia froze, her face going pale. “Alex… I was going to tell you, but… I didn’t know how.”

“What is it?” Alex asked, his heart pounding.

Nia looked away, tears in her eyes. “It’s complicated,” she whispered.

Alex didn’t push her for more. He wasn’t sure he was ready to hear it. But he knew, deep down, that whatever this secret was, it was going to change everything between them.
